Mesh Coils vs Standard Coils: What Is the Difference? (UK Guide)

Almost every new tank and pod kit now ships with a mesh coil. But what is the difference between mesh and a standard wire coil, and is it worth switching? This guide explains how each type works, the pros and cons, and how to pick the right resistance for your kit.

    What is a mesh coil?

A standard coil uses a round wire wound into a spiral. A mesh coil uses a flat strip or sheet of metal mesh instead. The mesh has a much larger surface touching the cotton, so it heats more evenly and more e-liquid is vaporised at once.

Mesh vs standard coils at a glance

    Mesh coil Standard wire coil
Heat-up Fast and even Can take a moment; hot spots possible
Flavour Usually fuller and more consistent Good, but can fade sooner
Vapour More vapour at the same power Less vapour
    E-liquid use Higher Lower
Battery use Higher on sub-ohm coils Lower
Lifespan Often longer, as heat is spread out Varies with liquid and power

    Which resistance should I choose?

    • 0.8 ohm and above (MTL): a tighter, cigarette-style draw. Best with nic salts or higher-strength freebase.
    • 0.4 to 0.6 ohm (restricted DL): a looser draw with more vapour. Works with lower-strength liquids.
    • Below 0.3 ohm (sub-ohm DL): big clouds at higher wattage. Use 3mg or 6mg shortfills or freebase, never 20mg nic salt.

Always stay within the wattage range printed on the coil or its box.

Does my kit take mesh coils?

Coils are made for specific tanks or pods, so a mesh coil only fits if it is from your tank’s coil family. Many families include both mesh and standard versions, for example SMOK RPM and Geekvape M and Z series. Check our guide on which coil fits my vape kit before you buy.

Getting the best from a mesh coil

    1. Prime it. Drip a few drops on the cotton, fill the tank and wait five to ten minutes. See how to change and prime a coil.
    2. Start low. Begin at the bottom of the wattage range and work up.
    3. Keep it topped up. Mesh uses liquid quickly, so do not let the tank run nearly dry.
    4. Watch sweet liquids. Very sweet e-liquids gunk coils faster.

    Frequently asked questions

    Do mesh coils last longer?

Often, yes, because the heat is spread over a larger area. Your liquid, wattage and how much you vape still matter most.

Why does my mesh coil taste burnt?

Usually because it was not primed, the wattage is too high, or the tank ran low. Replace it if the taste stays.

Can I use nic salts with a mesh coil?

Yes, with mesh coils rated 0.8 ohm or higher on low power. Avoid nic salts on sub-ohm mesh coils.

Shortfill E-Liquids Explained: How to Add a Nicotine Shot (UK Guide)

Shortfill e-liquids are one of the most popular ways to buy e-liquid in the UK. They come in larger bottles, usually 50ml or 100ml, and contain no nicotine. Instead, the bottle is left part-empty so you can add a nicotine shot yourself. This guide explains how shortfills work and how to mix them.

Why are shortfills sold without nicotine?

UK rules limit nicotine e-liquid to bottles of up to 10ml. Shortfills get around this by selling the flavoured liquid at 0mg in a bigger bottle, with room left for one or more 10ml nicotine shots.

    What is a nicotine shot?

A nicotine shot is a 10ml bottle of unflavoured nicotine liquid, usually 18mg or 20mg. When you add it to a shortfill, it brings the whole bottle up to a lower, vapeable strength.

    How to mix a shortfill

    1. Open the shortfill bottle and remove the nozzle tip (most twist or pull off).
    2. Add your nicotine shot or shots.
    3. Replace the nozzle and shake the bottle well for a minute.
    4. Leave it to settle for a short while, then fill your tank or pod.

    Quick mixing guide

Shortfill Nicotine shots (18mg) Final strength (approx.)
    50ml in a 60ml bottle 1 x 10ml 3mg
    50ml in a 70ml bottle 2 x 10ml 5mg
    100ml in a 120ml bottle 2 x 10ml 3mg
    100ml in a 120ml bottle 2 x 10ml (20mg) 3.3mg

Always check the bottle size on the label, as the space left for shots varies by brand.

    Which devices suit shortfills?

Most shortfills are high in VG, which makes thicker vapour. They work best in vape kits and sub-ohm tanks with lower-resistance coils. For small pod kits, a 10ml nic salt is usually a better choice.

Shortfills and the Vaping Products Duty

Since 1 October 2026, all vaping liquids carry a duty of £2.20 per 10ml, including nicotine-free shortfills. That means a 100ml shortfill carries £22.00 of duty before VAT. Read our Vaping Products Duty guide for full details.

Yes. Shortfills can be vaped at 0mg if you do not want nicotine.

How many nicotine shots can I add?

Only as many as the bottle has space for. Check the bottle size on the label before adding shots.

  • How to Change and Prime a Vape Coil: Step-by-Step Guide

How to Change and Prime a Vape Coil: Step-by-Step Guide

The coil is the part of your vape that heats the e-liquid. Over time it wears out, and the flavour fades or tastes burnt. Changing and priming your coil properly gives you the best flavour and helps each new coil last longer. This guide works for most pod kits and tanks.

When should you change your coil?

    • A burnt or dry taste, even when the tank or pod is full
    • Flavour that is weaker than usual
    • Gurgling or leaking that does not stop after cleaning
    • Dark, sticky residue around the coil

How long a coil lasts depends on how much you vape and the liquid you use. Sweeter e-liquids usually wear coils out faster.

How to change a coil in a pod kit

    1. Remove the pod from the device.
    2. Empty any remaining e-liquid and pull out the old coil (if your pod has a replaceable coil). If your kit uses pods with built-in coils, simply replace the whole pod.
    3. Push the new coil firmly into place.
    4. Fill the pod with e-liquid and close it.
    5. Prime the coil (see below) before vaping.

How to change a coil in a tank

    1. Remove the tank from the device and empty it.
    2. Unscrew the base and remove the old coil.
    3. Screw in the new coil, then reassemble the tank.
    4. Fill the tank and prime the coil before use.

How to prime a new coil

Priming means letting the cotton inside the coil fully soak up e-liquid before you heat it. Skipping this step is the most common cause of a burnt first puff.

    1. Add a few drops of e-liquid directly onto the cotton through the coil’s side holes and top.
    2. Fill the pod or tank and wait 5 to 10 minutes.
    3. Take two or three gentle puffs without firing the device, if your kit allows it.
    4. Start on a lower power setting and increase slowly if your device is adjustable.

Tips to make coils last longer

    • Do not let the pod or tank run completely dry.
    • Use the right liquid for your coil: higher-resistance coils for nic salts, lower-resistance coils for high-VG liquids.
    • Take short pauses between puffs so the cotton can re-soak.
    • Stay within the wattage range printed on the coil.

    Frequently asked questions

How long should I wait after filling a new coil?

Wait at least 5 to 10 minutes so the cotton is fully soaked before your first puff.

Can I clean and reuse an old coil?

Rinsing can sometimes help a little, but most coils are designed to be replaced. A new coil gives the best flavour.

Why does my new coil taste burnt?

Usually because it was not primed long enough, or the power is set too high for that coil.
