Stocking up on nic salts or prefilled pods before Christmas? Storing them properly keeps the flavour at its best and, just as importantly, keeps them safely away from children and pets. Here is a simple guide for UK vapers and shops.
The basics: cool, dark and sealed
- Cool: store at normal room temperature or slightly below. Avoid radiators, windowsills and hot cars.
- Dark: sunlight and strong light break down flavourings over time. A drawer or cupboard is ideal.
- Sealed: keep caps tightly closed and leave prefilled pods in their packaging until you need them.
Keep them away from children and pets
Nicotine is toxic if swallowed, and e-liquid bottles can look like sweets or drinks to a child. Always:
- Store e-liquids, nic salts and pods in a high or locked cupboard.
- Keep child-resistant caps fully closed after every use.
- Never decant e-liquid into unlabelled bottles.
- Clean up spills straight away and wash your hands if liquid gets on your skin.
If a child or pet swallows e-liquid, get medical or veterinary advice straight away (call NHS 111 or your vet) and take the bottle with you.
How long do e-liquids and pods last?
Most sealed e-liquids and prefilled pods keep well for a long time, but quality slowly drops. Check the best-before or batch date on the packaging, and use the oldest stock first.
| Product | Storage tip | Signs it is past its best |
|---|---|---|
| 10ml nic salts | Cap closed, cupboard | Darker colour, muted flavour |
| 100ml shortfills | Upright, cap closed | Separation or stale taste |
| Prefilled pods | Leave in packaging until use | Leaking or weak flavour from a new pod |
| Spare coils | Dry, in original packaging | Damaged cotton or packaging |
Darker colour on its own is often normal, especially with sweet or tobacco flavours. For more on pod lifespan, see how long does a prefilled pod last?
Tips for shops storing trade stock
- Keep stock rooms cool and out of direct sunlight.
- Rotate stock so older batches sell first.
- Store boxes the right way up to reduce the risk of leaks.
- Keep all nicotine products behind the counter or out of reach of customers, in line with UK age-of-sale rules – see UK vape rules for shops.

FAQs
Should I keep e-liquid in the fridge?
There is no need. A cool, dark cupboard is fine. If you do store it somewhere cold, let it return to room temperature before use, as cold e-liquid is thicker.
Can I store prefilled pods once opened?
Once a pod is in use, keep it in the device, upright where possible, and use it within a reasonable time for the best flavour.
Can I return opened e-liquid?
No. For health and hygiene reasons, opened e-liquids and pods cannot be returned unless faulty. See our returns policy.
Vapes and nicotine products are for adults aged 18+ only. This product contains nicotine which is a highly addictive substance.
