MTL and DTL describe two different ways of inhaling from a vape. Choosing the right style makes a big difference to which device, coil and e-liquid will suit you. Here is a simple guide to both, plus the in-between option, RDL.
What is MTL (mouth-to-lung) vaping?
With MTL vaping you draw the vapour into your mouth first, then inhale it into your lungs – the same way most people smoke a cigarette. The draw is tighter, the clouds are smaller and the throat hit is stronger. Most pod kits and all prefilled pod kits are designed for MTL.
What is DTL (direct-to-lung) vaping?
With DTL vaping you inhale straight into your lungs in one breath, like breathing through a straw with the airflow wide open. It produces large clouds and a smoother, cooler hit. DTL uses vape kits and mods with sub-ohm tanks and runs at higher power.
What is RDL (restricted direct-to-lung)?
RDL sits between the two: a slightly restricted draw inhaled directly to the lungs, with moderate clouds. Many adjustable pod kits can be set up for RDL by opening the airflow and using a lower-resistance pod.
MTL vs DTL at a glance
| MTL | DTL | |
|---|---|---|
| Draw | Tight, cigarette-like | Open, airy |
| Coil resistance | Usually 0.8Ω and above | Sub-ohm, often 0.15–0.6Ω |
| Power | Low, around 8–20W | Higher, often 30–80W+ |
| Best e-liquid | Nic salts or 50/50, 10mg–20mg | High-VG shortfills (70/30), 0–6mg |
| Clouds | Small | Large |
| Liquid use | Low | High |
| Typical devices | Pod kits, prefilled pod kits | Vape kits, mods with sub-ohm tanks |
Which style suits you?
- Choose MTL if you want a discreet, simple device, a cigarette-like draw, or you prefer higher-strength nic salts.
- Choose DTL if you enjoy big clouds and strong flavour and use low-nicotine shortfills.
- Not sure? Start with an adjustable pod kit that can do both MTL and RDL by changing the airflow and pod.
Example devices
- MTL: Vaporesso XROS 4 Mini or any of our beginner pod kits.
- MTL to RDL: Voopoo Vinci 3 – adjustable airflow and a choice of coils.
- DTL: Uwell Crown X, Voopoo Argus P1s or GeekVape Aegis Solo.
Matching e-liquid to your style
Use the right liquid for your setup. High-strength nic salts in a powerful sub-ohm tank will be harsh, and thick high-VG shortfills can flood or burn a small MTL pod. Frequently asked questions
Is MTL or DTL better for beginners?
Most people start with MTL because pod kits are simple to use and the draw feels familiar.
Can I use nic salts for DTL?
It is not recommended. Nic salts are designed for low-power MTL devices. For DTL, use low-strength freebase or shortfills.
Does DTL use more e-liquid?
Yes. DTL runs at higher power, so it uses much more e-liquid than MTL.
