If you are an adult smoker or vaper looking for your first refillable vape, a pod kit is usually the simplest place to start. Pod kits are small, rechargeable and easy to fill, and since single-use disposables were banned in the UK in June 2025 they have become the most common choice. This guide explains what to look for and compares some popular beginner kits.
What makes a good beginner pod kit?
- Mouth-to-lung (MTL) draw – a tighter draw, similar to a cigarette, which suits nic salts.
- Simple controls – draw-activated or a single button, with no menus.
- Easy filling – a side or top fill port and a pod you can see through.
- USB-C charging and a battery that lasts a full day for most users.
- Cheap, easy-to-find pods – you will replace the pod or coil every one to two weeks.

Which e-liquid should I use?
Most beginner pod kits are designed for 10ml nic salts. Nic salts come in two UK strengths: 10mg and 20mg (the legal maximum). Our 10mg vs 20mg guide explains the difference, and nic salts vs freebase covers the two main types of e-liquid. Avoid thick, high-VG shortfills in small MTL pods, as they can flood or taste burnt.
Prefilled or refillable?
If you do not want to fill anything, a prefilled pod kit works like the old disposables but has a rechargeable battery and replaceable pods. Refillable kits usually cost less to run over time; see our cost comparison.
Getting started: first-day checklist
- Charge the kit fully before first use.
- Fill the pod, close the fill port, and leave it to soak for five minutes so the coil wicks properly.
- Take gentle, slow puffs at first.
- Keep spare pods to hand and change the pod when flavour fades – see how to prime a coil.
- Store e-liquid and devices out of reach of children and pets, and read our product safety advice.
Frequently asked questions
What is the easiest pod kit to use?
Draw-activated kits with no buttons, such as the Caliburn G3 Lite or Xlim Go, are among the simplest.
How long does a pod last?
With regular use, a refillable pod or coil usually lasts one to two weeks.
Can I use any e-liquid in a pod kit?
Nic salts and 50/50 e-liquids work best. Thick high-VG liquids are better suited to sub-ohm tanks.
