Since 1 June 2025, it has been illegal to sell or supply single-use (disposable) vapes anywhere in the UK – England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The ban was introduced mainly to cut waste: millions of disposables, each with a lithium battery, were being thrown away every week. Here is what the rules mean for shoppers and retailers, and what you can still buy.

What counts as a “single-use” vape?

In simple terms, a vape is treated as single-use if it cannot be both recharged and refilled (or have its pod replaced). A legal vape must:

  • have a rechargeable battery, usually charged by USB-C; and
  • be refillable with e-liquid, or take replaceable prefilled pods; and
  • allow the pod or coil to be replaced when it wears out.

A device that is thrown away once its liquid or battery runs out is banned, however it is labelled.

What can you still buy?

Do the other UK vape rules still apply?

Yes. The ban sits alongside the existing rules, which have not changed:

  • Nicotine e-liquid is limited to 20mg/ml.
  • Refill bottles containing nicotine are limited to 10ml, and pods and tanks to 2ml.
  • Products must be notified to the MHRA before sale.
  • Sales are for adults aged 18 and over only.
  • From 1 October 2026, vaping products also carry Vaping Products Duty. Read our duty guide for details.

What about “big puff” devices?

Devices advertised with very high puff counts are legal only if they meet the rules above. They reach those counts with bigger batteries, refill containers or several pods, while each pod still holds no more than 2ml. See our big puff vapes guide.

Advice for shops

Retailers must not sell single-use vapes, and Trading Standards can take action against shops that do. If you run a shop, our UK vape rules for shops guide covers the wider rules, and you can apply for a trade account for wholesale pricing on compliant stock.

How to dispose of old vapes

Never put a vape in a household bin – the battery is a fire risk. Take old devices and batteries to a shop take-back point or a household recycling centre. Our product safety page has more advice.

Frequently asked questions

Are disposable vapes illegal to own?

The ban covers selling and supplying single-use vapes. It is aimed at businesses rather than people who already own one.

Is a prefilled pod kit the same as a disposable?

No. A prefilled pod kit has a rechargeable battery and replaceable pods, so it is legal.

What is the cheapest legal alternative?

Over time, a refillable pod kit with 10ml nic salts usually costs the least. See our beginner pod kit guide.

This article is general information, not legal advice. Our products are for adults aged 18 and over. Nicotine is a highly addictive substance.
