Christmas means parties, visits and long journeys. If you vape, it helps to know the rules before you set off. This guide covers the main situations UK vapers meet over the festive season. Vapes and nicotine products are for adults aged 18 and over only.
Pubs, restaurants and office parties
The UK smoking ban covers tobacco, not vapes. However, every venue can set its own policy, and most pubs, restaurants and workplaces do not allow vaping indoors. Always check the house rules and use the outdoor smoking or vaping area where there is one.
The Tobacco and Vapes Act gives the government powers to extend smoke-free rules to vaping in some places in future, so rules may change. Until then, the venue decides.
At family gatherings
Be considerate: ask before vaping in someone’s home and step outside if there are children, pregnant women or non-vapers present. Keep devices, pods and e-liquids out of reach of children and pets, as nicotine can be harmful if swallowed.
Trains and stations
Most UK train operators do not allow vaping on trains or at stations. Treat the whole journey as no-vaping and wait until you have left the station.
In the car
Vaping while driving is not illegal in itself, but if vapour blocks your view or the device distracts you, you could be stopped for driving without due care. Pull over safely if you need to vape, and never vape with under-18s in the car.
Flying home for Christmas
- Carry vapes in your hand luggage. Devices with lithium batteries must not go in checked (hold) baggage.
- Do not vape or charge on board. Using or charging a vape on an aircraft is not allowed.
- Follow liquid rules for e-liquids. Pack bottles in line with your airport’s liquids rules, and check your airline’s guidance before you fly.
- Check the destination. Some countries restrict or ban vapes, so check local rules if you are travelling abroad.
Cold weather tips
Low temperatures can shorten battery life and thicken e-liquid. Keep your device in an inside pocket and read our cold weather battery care guide.
