Cold UK winters affect vape kits more than most people realise. Batteries drain faster, e-liquid gets thicker and pods can give weaker flavour. Here is how to look after your pod kit or prefilled kit through the colder months.
Why cold weather affects vape batteries
Pod kits use lithium-ion batteries. In low temperatures the chemical reaction inside the battery slows down, so it delivers less power and the charge indicator can drop faster than usual. This is normal and the battery usually recovers once it warms up again – but repeated exposure to freezing conditions can shorten its overall life.
7 winter battery tips
- Keep it in an inside pocket. Body heat keeps the battery closer to room temperature when you are outdoors.
- Don’t leave your kit in the car overnight. Car interiors can drop below freezing in winter.
- Let it warm up before charging. If your kit has been out in the cold, leave it indoors for 20–30 minutes before plugging it in. Charging a very cold lithium-ion battery is not recommended.
- Use the right cable. Charge with the cable supplied with your kit or a good-quality replacement of the same type.
- Don’t charge unattended overnight. Charge on a hard, non-flammable surface and unplug once it is full.
- Top up rather than run it flat. Lithium-ion batteries are happiest when they are not fully drained, especially in the cold.
- Carry it safely. Keep your kit away from keys and coins in the same pocket.
Thicker e-liquid and weaker flavour
E-liquid becomes thicker when it is cold, so it soaks into the coil more slowly. You may notice weaker flavour or a slightly dry taste on the first few puffs. To help:
- Warm the kit in your hand or pocket for a minute before using it.
- Take a couple of gentle puffs rather than one long, hard pull.
- If you have a refillable kit, prime new coils properly – see our guide on how to change and prime a vape coil.
- Nic salts are usually a 50/50 mix and flow well in pod kits; thicker high-VG liquids are more affected by the cold. Read more in what are nic salts?
Signs your battery needs replacing
| Sign | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Drains within a few hours even when warm | The battery has lost capacity with age |
| Gets hot while charging | Stop using it and replace the kit |
| Swollen or damaged casing | Do not use or charge it – recycle it safely |
| Won’t charge with a known-good cable | Charging port or battery fault |

Recycle old kits properly
Never put vape kits or batteries in your household bin – they can cause fires in bin lorries and waste sites. Take them to a small electricals recycling point at your local tip or a participating shop.
FAQs
Can the cold permanently damage my vape battery?
Short spells in the cold usually just reduce performance temporarily. Regularly leaving a kit in freezing conditions, or charging it while it is very cold, can shorten battery life.
Why does my prefilled pod taste weaker outside in winter?
The e-liquid is thicker when cold, so it reaches the coil more slowly. Warming the kit in your pocket for a minute usually helps.
Is it safe to charge my vape next to a radiator?
No. Charge at normal room temperature on a hard surface, away from direct heat sources.
Vapes and nicotine products are for adults aged 18+ only. This product contains nicotine which is a highly addictive substance.
